Jack had gotten Ianto and Gwen tucked in for the night and warmed up by the fire before heading upstairs. He entered the Doctor's room quietly, just watching him sleep for a minute before stripping down and sliding into bed beside him. "Hey," he whispered. "Wake up?"

"Shh," he breathed, holding on. "Moral high ground."

He laughed a little, quietly, then it turned into an almost shaking sob.

Jack held on tightly, kissing him soft and slow. "I don't want to be enemies, Doctor. I love you."

"I know you do. I..." He shivered and gulped again. "I'm more used to enemies than friends."

He rolled off, pushing the Doctor's shoulder so he could see his face. "Think you've got it in you to give me a go?" he repeated, just as much of a challenge this time as earlier.

The Doctor's lips quirked slightly, and he looked Jack in the eye. "Yeah."

Jack cupped his cheek, gently stroking beneath his eye with a light thumb. "I can't keep doing this, Doctor," he smiled. "I'm not going to keep doing this."

For some reason, that terrified the Doctor more than anything before it. "I'm sorry," he said, meeting his gaze.

"I forgive you," Jack replied, kissing his softly. "Now you need to forgive yourself because I can't hurt you any more. I can't be that for you."

The Doctor nodded slowly. "Yeah," he said. "I kinda figured that out. Jack...?"

He closed his eyes and nodded, leaning in to kiss him slowly, tenderly tracing the softness of those lips. "You're welcome."
