It was a day with relatively little to do, so he was taking his time picking through the clothes box. Not having any luck with shirts, he closed the lid and when he opened it again, it was filled with trendy girl clothes. That was unusual...unless, of course, there happened to be a petite blonde behind him waiting for her turn.

"Hi there," he smiled, stepping aside. "I haven't seen you before."

It wasn't that Buffy didn't look fabulous, because in her form-fitting jeans and some flowy black, sleeveless blouse, dagger still strapped to her thigh, there was no need to change, but she wanted to be the first to nab something decent-looking.

"I could say the same," she said. Cute guy. And wow, look at that smile. She wondered how long they could be 'together' before he dissapeared. Or got murdered.

"Captain Jack Harkness," he offered, name and hand together. "Are you new?"

Buffy snorted a bit at that and took his hand in a firm, strong handshake, eye contact, lips quirked up in a smile.

"Oh, no. I've been year over a year. Buffy. Summers. Fighting civilian," she said. The name sounded familiar, sure, but it didn't set off any alarms.

Buffy. This was Buffy.

How they'd never even seen each other in seven months was nearly a miracle. A cold ache spread through his gut and he blinked once, hoping it came off as him checking her out without any subtlety instead of the reality of him trying to banish memories her name alone called up.

"Great to meet you, Buffy. I've been here that long too. Funny how we've never...crossed paths."

And she was getting thoroughly checked out. Sometimes, it was just good to know you still had it. It was sad, though, that she needed that assurance.

"I know," Buffy said, shrugging simply. "Shame, though..." She swept the hair off of her shoulder.

"Oh, I don't know. Good things come to those who wait...isn't that what they say?" he said, no trace of the encroaching rush pounding through his body noticable in his voice. He could feel his heart beginning to race and his hands starting to sweat, and wished desperately that he could get control of himself. He honestly didn't know how long he could stand here and just talk to her.

"You wanted the box, I'm guessing?" he asked, moving out of her way. "Nothing in there is my color."

In Buffy's estimation, there really was no color that wasn't his, especially the blue of his eyes. That was most definitely his color.

She peered in the box and saw the various tank tops and boot cut jeans and gave him a brilliant smile.

"I bet you could pull it off."

"Pulling things off isn't exactly my problem," he grinned, forcing himself to be friendly when all he really wanted to do was bolt. At least that was a familiar sensation.

He looked her over, head to toe. She was built well. Looked strong, but sweet. Great bottom, nice hair...her breasts were a little small but they were just right on her frame.

Just the thought of Faramir treating her the way he'd treated Jack...oh, yeah. That was the wrong train of thought.

"I'll get out of your way, Buffy. I hope you find something nice," he said, moving toward the door.

Well, that had never happened. Not once could Buffy think of a time that someone had taken such a good, long look at her and decided it was time to leave. Well, she was used to the leaving, but not in that context.

"Jack," she said, and it wasn't a question and it wasn't a command. It was a simple recitation. There was the question behind it, though, her confusion that packed a punch, as usual.

"Buffy?" he replied, looking back over his shoulder. He kept his eyes on her hair, just to the side of her eyes and even though he looked relaxed, he could feel sweat breaking out along the small of his back.

Huh. Maybe he simply just didn't like what he saw... which puzzled her, actually, because she was still in prime shape and she always looked god damn good. Maybe he was gay. Or really, really confused.

"It was nice meeting you," she said, and put on her best smile again, just in case. "I'll see you around."

He didn't even know her, and yet his smile radiated warmth and affection. "You can count on it, Buffy," he purred, meeting her eyes for just a second. There was no way this girl...woman...girl deserved to ever know what had happened.

"It was nice meeting you, too."
