Jack lead Tosh to his hut. It wasn't far and he walked in silence. He wasn't going to press her until they had some privacy.

Across the compound grounds, through some trees and along a path that was well worn with the foot traffic that daily made its way from huts to the central building, Jack kept a firm hold on her. Firm, but gentle--like he might hold any other priceless object.

It wasn't until they'd arrived and he lead her to one of the chairs on the porch that he let his arm drop.

"Sit."

Tosh had allowed herself to be led... Okay, truly, it wasn't really allowed when Jack was in a mood like this one, but she hadn't fought. She'd tried to stop her tears with little success, though she didn't seem to be crying that much. Not anymore.

She sat, sinking down on the chair he indicated. NOt saying anything, just sitting.

Jack left her there and went inside to get her a cup of water. He wasn't sure what was wrong, but his gut told him it wasn't some hormone-induced crying jag.

"I'll be on the porch," he said to Greg. "With Toshiko."

House was lying in their bed with a book, Padfoot lounging at his feet. He glanced over the top of his glasses and said, "Uh, okay," wondering why he needed the blow-by-blow.

She'd never noticed how close his hut was to Bohemia before. SIlly of her really, it was obvious. She'd just never had reason to think of it before now. Pulling a leg up underneath her, she tried not to stare off at it in the distance. She couldn't stop herself from glancing that way though.

Jack gave House a sheepish smile, then walked back out and handed the glass to Tosh. On the porch, looking out at the collection of neighboring huts, Jack took his chair and pulled it closer.

Padfoot had followed him out and sat next to him, and Jack gave the dog a pet and a shove.

"When you're ready," he said softly, "Tell me what's wrong."

What wasn't wrong? At that point it seemed like so much. Tosh took a sip of the drink before looking away from the huts and back at Jack. "Mimi. It's over between us. She couldn't.." Tosh couldn't finish, fighting the tears back again.

"She couldn't," he repeated, leaning forward and pulling her close. There were probably quite few thing Mimi 'couldn't', but the list narrowed considerably when he took Tosh's state into account. "Over over?"

"I think so." She leaned into him, needing the comfort right now. "Owen asked me to move in with him. When I told her... She couldn't do it anymore, be second." It was fair and Tosh knew it. The only problem was she wasn't second to Tosh. Not by a long run.

It barely made sense to Jack, but only because a woman was sifferent from a man. Owen wasn't and couldn't be what Mimi was...and vice versa.

He didn't release his hold. In fact, his fingers moved lightly down her back.

"It'll be okay," he assured her, just as he'd assured...damn, so many others.

"Will it?" She honestly didn't think it would, and the words came out more bitter then she'd intended. "I didn't think it would be like this Jack, that I'd lose her because of this."

"It will," he replied resolutely. With Mimi or without, Tosh would be okay...that much he knew.

"Things never turn out like you think, here. Never. But life goes on."

And to punctuate the sentiment, he gently slid a hand down to her stomach.

His touch made her smile as she leaned against him, needing the reminder of the good things right now. "I don't know Jack, I mean, I know in the long run, but..."

How could she say that this had put everything with Owen into a different perspective.

"No buts," he replied gently, his hand sliding just a little lower to rest below her navel. "You think I'm going to let anything happen to my Tosh? Not gonna happen. It'll. Be. Okay."

"There are days I wonder how everything became so complicated," her hand moved to rest over his, she was sure he could feel the bump there, it was just barely visible through her clothes even. Looking up she smiled at him, a sad sort of smile that only matched her tear streaked face. "In some ways I guess I'm lucky too."

"Tosh..." he started, but there wasn't much he could say. Things got complicated, things got easier, people came and went and every day was just survival. It was such a human thing, the Doctor would have said. His Doctor, anyways.

Jack's fingers moved lightly over the slightly harder bulge of her belly and he smiled, then leaned in to press his lips to her forehead.

"Stay here tonight."

There was something so right about Jack. She knew he wasn't their Jack, they'd been through that a million times. But Jack, this Jack. In some ways he was more hers then the other one had ever been.

Tosh didn't say anything for a moment, liking how this felt. Not wanting this closeness, this friendship they'd developed to ever change from what it was now. "Are you sure?" She didn't want to walk all the way back to her hut on her own, not knowing if Ianto would be there or not, and she couldn't face Owen, not tonight. "No one will mind?"

"Greg!" he called, lifting his chin bit not looking away from her eyes. "I'm gonna put up the hammock for Tosh so she can stay here tonight."

He smiled. "Unless you'd rather have the bed."

"And kick you both out?" That made her smile grow, as she pictured House's reaction to being informed of that. "I'm sure I'd never hear the end of it."

House glanced up, just barely able to see them through the doorway. "Whatever, but I'm not leaving. She's not pregnant enough yet to trump crippled."

Jack grinned and shook his head, the curve o teeth behind his lips gleaming as the sun sank and the sky darkened. "He's such a gentleman. Come on inside while I hang it up, okay?"

Tosh wasn't sure she'd say gentleman, but his comment had made her smile, her mouth twitching as she followed Jack inside. "The hammock will be fine. Thank you."
