Once they'd all gotten themselves ready, Jack lead them off past the Compound, and through the jungle. He moved at a brisk pace, never having been a fan of the old addage 'the army moves as fast as its slowest member' because this wasn't a troop. This was a squadron and he knew how to keep that sort of thing going.

He had his doubts about Peter and Claude, but knew Sarah Jane, Gwen and Ianto wouldn't hesitate in a fight. It was always good to have a medic on the team and since Owen was likely needed more in the clinic, Peter was the next best option.

"Half a mile, maybe less," he called back as he came to a stop and drank a little. "Last chance to pee, drink, or run away." It was as they rested that he heard something move in the underbrush, just before a black dog emerged. "Or show up late to the party. If you're here, Fucker, you're working."

[Gathering style til they hit Dino territory. Talk to Jack, or amongst yourselves!]

Ianto had never been one to think well on his feet, which was actually an asset at this moment. The more walking they did, the less he was able to think about what exactly was happening to Daniel at that moment. Or worse, the possibility that maybe Daniel had been the exception to the rule, that he had disappeared for good and gone back to Colorado and the Stargate team and into Adria's clutches, not just dinosaur territory.

He kept his head down and walked, and when they stopped, he still kept his head down, drinking water automatically just to keep himself hydrated, lifting his gaze discreetly every so often to see how the rest of the group was, or to see if there were any snakes dropping down by his head like last time.

"Ianto?" he asked, moving closer to the man. "Don't check out completely..."

"I'm not," he assured Jack quickly. "It's about five and four-fifths miles from the tree house to the fence. We've covered about five and two-fifths of that in about an hour and thirteen minutes. We're keeping a pace of four and a half miles an hour, and, assuming the maps in the Compound are accurate, if we continue straight on we'll hit the opposite shore in about half an hour."

He gave Jack a quick half-smile, more to reassure the other man than anything Ianto actually felt. "I'm fine. We've made good time."

"Good time," he agreed, taking hold of Ianto's arm. "But we won't reach the shore in a half an our. There's a few square miles between the fence and the sand, and somewhere in there is Daniel. Greg. Children...Sunny Baudelaire. Wednesday Addams. Delirium," he listed off. "When Peter got the medical stuff, I went and talked to Ray. There are a lot of people missing."

Ianto nodded at that. He knew it was about more than just them, just the people they cared about, but he really didn't want to find anyone else before they found Daniel. He clapped Jack's shoulder in return, not quite so firmly. "We'll find them. I know," he said.

The fucking dog wandered over and sat obediently at Jack's heel, but he ignored it. "The dinosaurs probably haven't recovered their numbers since the tsunami. A lot of them died when we couldn't get them behind the fence in time. Chances are there will be young ones, but don't hesitate to shoot them if they're dangerous. And shoot to kill. No reason to just make them hurt or crippled."

Crippled. God, how he hated that word. It was like bile on his tongue just to say it, even about the prehistoric beasts.

Ianto nodded again, listening attentively to Jack's instructions, although there was a slight lift to his eyebrow that said he wondered why Jack was wasting his breath telling Ianto to shoot to kill. More often than not he didn't have a problem. "Right," he said. "Aim for the head and the heart. No taking any of them home as pets."

"And if anyone else loses the nerve, do it for them," he continued. "But with any luck at all, we won't see many, we'll get in, get the people, and get out."

Not a prayer of that actually happening, but it was a nice thought.
