He'd talked to House. That was...what was today? He'd talked to House on Monday. That had to be days ago.

Jack was in his hut. He'd been there...days, maybe. He had some water, and he'd eaten something. Maybe a while ago, he couldn't remember.

Is this what it was to have a broken heart? Had he done this to people? Had he done this to people all over time and space?

Had he done this to people here?

Fuck it. Jack rolled over and pulled the sheet up over his face. If anyone needed him, they'd know where to find him or who to ask. It's not like he was going anywhere.

[dual duty because I'm lazy. this is for ace, cuddy and the doctor. he's still not talking, so I'm really sorry if these go short or die.]

"Thanks," he replied as he took them up and walked to the window to shake them out a few times. ""I get spiders," he mentioned, checking through the inside before he pulled them on.

"Okay, I'm up. You want to come too?" he asked directly.

"Yeah," the Doctor said, "I could use some coffee." Spiders in his pants. Christ. There had to be something one could do for that.

He got up and waited by the door.

Jack walked around the bed and walked out behind him, squinting against the daylight. "Coffee sounds kind of good," he said, stretching hard once he was outside and had the room to do so.

The Doctor stuffed his hands in his pockets and started to walk. "Yeah. Sometimes it just beats out tea. Don't tell Sarah Jane I said that."

Jack followed along, head held high. Now that he was out where people could see him, he wasn't going to let anyone see this weakness. That, and it wouldn't reflect well on the Doctor.

Even now, he defaulted to appearance and advantage.

"I'll keep it quiet from her," he agreed."

The Doctor hadn't exactly been banking on that reaction, but he'd known what sorts of results he'd get if he could just get Jack out of his hut. "You can shower first, though," he said, and grinned.

"You think I should shave?" he asked, his tone growing lighter, more like himself. "Or should I keep it? I haven't worn a beard since...forever."

"Might get itchy in the heat." The Doctor grinned a little at him. "Though it might make you look older. I sometimes debate growing one."

"How much older?" he asked, holding the door open for him. "Like distinguished older, or trying-too-hard-to-look-older older?"

From: [identity profile] sortofaman.livejournal.com
"Right now it's the latter," the Doctor said. "Your face just isn't made for it, Jack."

"Oh, yeah? What's my face made for?" he asked, managing a small grin as he headed straight to the bathrooms.

"You're doomed to remain boyish." The Doctor leaned against the wall, in the bathroom but not following Jack anywhere near the shower.

"Doomed to more than that," he said as he stripped off his shorts and stepped into the stall, letting the water run for a minute before stepping into it. "I'm not going to slip and fall, if you wanted coffee."

"I know. Maybe I just want to stick around this time."

He looked over the top of the high wall, a little incredulous, but didn't protest. He was too busy scrubbing the filth of a few days from his body. "You want to grab me a razor?"

The Doctor looked back at him, serious, then padded over and fetched a razor. He handed it in past the curtain, careful not to look--he didn't think that would be appreciated. "Scrapping the beard?"

"Might as well. It's not like I grew it on purpose. I do remember the last time I had one...this hot little nurse took care of it while I was laid up in Algiers," he said, the heat of the water helping to wash away more than the grime.

"How very English Patient of you," the Doctor said. "Male or female nurse? Not like it matters."

That actually drew a soft chuckle from him. "Marie Ange," he said softly from behind the curtain. "She was from Nice. Her father was the local butcher."

"Which was where she learned to shave young men?" the Doctor asked.

"You learn to do a lot of things when boys lose their arms," Jack said, then went silent so he could take care of the growth.

"Was this the Great War?" the Doctor asked, far more soberly now. He leaned against the wall.

"Yeah, you know me and that time window," he replied. "Of course, I'd been there when the French took it the first time. Nice place. Warm."

"Bit dry for me, I always thought," the Doctor said. He leaned his head back further and tried not to think about Jack naked. Or in Algiers. Or about boys losing their arms from shrapnel or worse.

"I always liked London...and Paris. Paris was great before the Nazis got there," Jack said, laying the razor aside and rinsing off.
