The Wedding || November 3rd
Nov. 2nd, 2009 09:57 pmIt had started as any other day, but it wasn't long before there was bustling about in Bohemia. Jack was grateful for once that Logan slept long and hard in the mornings. He'd gone out and directed a little, then returned to the hut. It wouldn't be long before people started arriving and the party got going. It was impossible to miss what was going on and he was sure Logan was going to get suspicious.
And after Halloween, Jack realized this would be a problem. Logan had sworn off parties. He needed to figure out a way to get the other man dressed up and out into the crowd...without letting him know what Jack had so carefully planned. There was no way Jack could have done it alone, though.Ianto had executed everything perfectly- there really wasn't anything the man couldn't do, and do perfectly. It wasn't like Jack wasn't aware of that fact...he just had never had cause to know first hand just how well Ianto could pull off a wedding.
Everything was in order. Glen would be waiting. Joe would be there with his band. Scotty would have all the food laid out. Prior and Maureen would have Bohemia decorated. All Jack had to do was get the groom out there.
"Hey," he said casually. "You want to get away from the noise? We could go on a date."
Logan lay stretched out on his side, his head on his pillow and his arms around Jack's. He yawned lazily, the last bit of blanket that had been keeping his feet warm slipping away and falling to the floor. "What's going on out there?" he asked quietly, his voice slightly muffled by the pillow he was holding in his arms.
A date didn't sound awful though, and he stretched out slowly, his arms moving up into the air as his back arched and popped. "You really want to go on a date right now?" he asked, finally sitting up and moving a little closer.
"It's a party," he replied, as if it happened all the time in Bohemia for no good reason. "I've actually been planning on asking you for something today. It's...well, it's sort of an anniversary. Important day, to me anyhow."
"It is?" Logan asked, feeling guilty when he couldn't remember just what had happened this day last year. "Logan had such a weak grasp of time here, and unless he memorized dates and stared at the calendar, he was fairly clueless when it came to major events.
"Then we should go out. We can do whatever you want," Logan decided, slipping out of bed and wandering over to kiss Jack softly. "Let me change out of these first though," he grinned, gesturing at his baggy pajama bottoms.
"It is," he confirmed, catching Logan by the waist and pulling him to a stop. "It's been a year since the first time I asked if you'd stay here. It was...it was a thing. So it's special to me," Jack explained. "So I want to do something special with you. We could...how about we start with dressing up? I mean nice clothes, not anything...unusual."
"No maid costumes then? Damn, I'm never gonna get to use that feather duster..." Logan replied with a fake sigh. "Alright, how about you pick the clothes then?" he suggested, kissing Jack again and smiling fondly at the memory of his first night in the hut they now shared.
Goal one achieved. Jack hardly noticed he was conning Logan...and he wasn't. Just slightly manipulating the situation. He wanted it all to be a surprise and he'd kept it quiet for a month. He wasn't going to have it all fall apart now, not long before the event.
He nodded and went to the closet and pretended to hunt around, though he knew just what he wanted Logan in. Eventually, he pulled out a very nice suit that was a step below a tux, complete with shirt, tie, suspenders...everything.
"I want you to wear this."
"They open a fancy restaurant while I was sleeping?" Logan asked with a laugh, looking unsure, but eventually taking the suit and laying it out neatly on the bed. "Whatever, do I get to pick out what you're wearing then?" he asked curiously, though they both knew what Logan was likely to pick out, his gaze wandering over to the crisp uniform that hung in the closet and one of the other man's great coats. "...Or did you have something in mind?"
"I had something in mind," he replied, pulling out a second suit. It was nearly the same, but the shirt was light instead of dark. It even had a tie with the ensemble...just like Logan's. "I thought it'd make it more special, even though there isn't a fancy restaurant or nice club. We can make whatever we do fun, though. We always do."
It was a nice suit, and Logan wet his lips before offering a smile. "Yeah, we really do," he agreed, starting to get changed, eager to see where the day would take them.
He was doing well with the suspenders, but when he reached the tie he faltered, struggling to remember how to get the knot to sit flat. Tapping Jack's arm, he gestured for the other man to give him a hand.
Jack's own tie hung loose around his collar as he reached out to fix and center the knot. He smiled softly, giving himself away a little, though in the moment it was just clear that he was in love.
"You look gorgeous," he said softly. "Memorable."
Logan laughed softly and smiled. "You're a freak," he said simply, kissing Jack again and then starting to knot the other man's tie for him. "Beautiful freak, but still a freak."
Logan's words were tender though, and he took his time as he knotted Jack's tie as neatly as he could, smoothing his hand over the other man's shirt and then fixing his jacket. "You're hiding something from me," he said after a moment. "I can feel it. I've been sure of it for weeks now. -It's making me nervous," he confessed. "Something's happening today. Is it the party? Are we having an anniversary party?"
"Don't be nervous. I've just been planning something for us," he replied. "Buuuut..."
There was always a but, and Jack sold it well.
"I know you swore off parties, but the one out there is in full swing and we're going to have to cut through it to get where we're going. It's...just a party. Think you can handle it?"
It had been a long time since he'd had to lie like this. He was afraid he was rusty.
"I can handle it, if you can walk past a party without wooing anyone," Logan replied, frowning just a little and then looking at Jack again. "Lead the way, Romeo."
Jack opened the door and ushered Logan out. There were people everywhere and Jack couldn't help but smile. He spotted some people across the crowd and took hold of Logan's hand, leading him through the center of the little community. People parted for the pair, dressed like they were going to a funeral.
Or a wedding.
Jack only stopped when they were in front of Glen Bateman who was ready and waiting. Ianto stood to one side and Joe on the other. Clearly they were all in on what was going on. Jack turned to Logan and smiled, giving his hand a little squeeze.
"Will you marry me? Right now? Again? In front of everyone, so they all know how much you mean to me?' he asked.
It had been a slow build, but what was happening had clicked just as they reached Glen. They were getting married, again. Jack had planned their wedding, and it was happening right now. He looked stunned for a moment, and he looked from Glen to Jack, and then the people who'd decided to attend. Speechless and more emotional than he cared to admit or let show.
It was more than anyone had ever done for him before, and he swallowed the lump in his throat as he nodded. "Yeah- yes, I mean, I do. I want to. Of course I do. ...Jesus, Jack- I..."
He didn't know what to say, and in the end he simply squeezed Jack's hand in return and said the only thing that mattered right that moment.
"Let's get married."
It didn't take long. Not much longer than it had in the office when Glen had said his piece and Logan and Jack had exchanged vows and signed the paper. But somehow, this time, everyone vanished. Jack only heard Logan. He only saw Logan. Glen's words were distant and soft in his ear as he promised to have and to hold, to love and cherish, to pledge his vow...he repeated all the words, feeling them more than being aware of what he was saying. He heard Logan clearly, though. The other man said the same things and Jack felt as if his heart had swelled to twice its normal size. He could barely breathe, and he couldn't quit smiling.
Logan stumbled over a few of his words, though they were all heartfelt and earnest. He was simply nervous in a way he never was. His pulse was pounding and Jack was saying all those things that meant everything. More than any words had the right to mean. It was intense and perfect- and it felt right. Maybe even more-so than it had the first time. As if somehow, things had only gotten better.
Yes, they still fought, and yeah, some days they drove one another to do things no sane person would ever do- but it worked for them. It really just made sense.
When Glen prompted them to kiss, Logan didn't hesitate at all, lunging forward and kissing Jack with all the intensity he usually saved for the bedroom. People were so chaste at weddings, but if you asked Logan, it was the one place where you should kiss the man or woman you loved so hard that they'd never forget it.
Jack caught Logan's face in both hands and kissed him back, sealing the promise. And that was all there was to it. They were pronounced married in the eyes of the law and the community...and now everyone who had come knew. Logan wasn't the only one surprised by the event.
"Sorry I didn't make it through the party without wooing someone," he said softly, dragging Logan away from Glen for a brief moment of privacy. "This is what I've been planning all month. You were right. It's been hard to keep it secret."
"I knew you were up to something, but- Shit, Jack, you didn't have to do this alone. I would have helped," Logan replied, still grinning like a fool and clinging to the other man. "You're amazing. This is crazy. It's perfect. ...Thank you."
"I didn't want help. I wanted to throw a party just for you," he said. "And I did have help. Joe invited everyone, I didn't. Well, I invited a few. Ianto's amazing and he pulled everything together. I'm going to tease him about being a wedding fairy for the rest of his life. Scotty made the food, Helen brought the alcohol. Prior and Maureen did the decorations. I wanted it to be special. For you. You deserve it."
"Guess I owe Joe a father of the year trophy, huh?" Logan said with a smile. "...And your friends are really nice. They didn't have to do all that."
Leaning in, he kissed Jack again, softly this time. "I love you. and I meant every word in that vow. I won't fuck this up. I'm gonna make sure of that. I swear."
"I love you, too," he replied, closing his eyes and pressing his forehead to Logan's. "Now...let's have some fun."
