He's just more flexible when it comes to dancing

Jack found the package addressed to him and scurried off to his room to open it. He wasn't used to getting gifts. In fact, he hadn't gotten one since...well, there was Christmas, but he hadn't been given anything since Jane baked him a pie all his own.

He unwrapped it carefully and poured over the records and just stared at the player for a long time. It was surreal, this thing that really wasn't anything spectacular and yet he was so happy he couldn't stop smiling. After a long time of just exploring it, he took an LP out of it's cover and laid it on the turntable. A few cranks of the handle and it began to spin, Moonlight Serenade spilling out his door and down the stairs.

Ianto was finished admiring his new wardrobe. Honestly, he wanted to admire it a bit more and relish in the fact that he would not have to bend to the whims of the clothesbin anytime soon, but there were people in the treehouse, and mooning over suits was not proper behavior.

And now there was music drifting down from the floors above. Curious, Ianto shut the doors of his new present and wandered up the stairs. He stopped at the door of Jack's room, grinning lightly at the man. "You got a nice mystery present, too?"

Jack stood before the player with his hands in his pockets,just watching the record spin. He looked over at Ianto with a thousand-watt smile. "I did. I love Glenn Miller. One of my favorites."

The grin brightened slightly at Jack's obvious good cheer, and Ianto stepped into the room. He kept his hands in his pockets as he neared, throwing an appraising eye over the player and the various records. "It's quite nice. I'm glad you got something to enjoy."

"I'm not enjoying as much as I could," he smiled, looking down at Ianto's feet, then back up under his lashes. Barely a heartbeat passed and he closed the distance, holding out his hand. "Dance?"

There was a momentary flush of embarrassment and a flash of a somewhat nervous smile before Ianto conceded, taking Jack's hand. "I'll try. No promises on how well."

"Hello?"

Gwen had only been inside a few moments when the music had begun upstairs, giving her a brief start. Curious as always, she's now creeping slowly up the stairs, brows arched and eyes wide.

Jack was swaying to the strains of clarinets and brass, singing softly.

I stand at your gate and the song that I sing is of moonlight.
I stand and I wait for the touch of your hand in the June night.
The roses are sighing a Moonlight Serenade.

When he finally turned about and saw her, he smiled and held out his hand without a word, beckoning her to dance.

There's only a slim moment's worth of hesitation before Gwen steps forward to accept the proffered hand, her smile vaguely sheepish. "It's been awhile since I danced," she says, which was to say, it's been awhile since she's danced properly. Flailing about the living room to Madonna doesn't quite count, in Gwen's estimation.

"Just do what I do," Jack said, taking her by the hand and the waist and looking into her eyes. "Except backward and in far less comfortable shoes."

Laughing, Gwen nods, her free arm slipping up around Jack's neck. Her eyes are fixed on his, if only because it's nigh on impossible to look away from that blue-eyed gaze. "And what sort of dance is this, then?"

She hears the music floating from Jack's room, music she's heard before, so recently her breath actually catches. It draws her up and she sees him standing there, smiling in a way she had only seen him smile a few times. That night in the dance hall was one of them. Leaning against the door frame, she speaks softly, knowing he likely wouldn't have much an idea of what she was talking about, only would have known what he had read in the reports. "You looked so at home that night. I felt completely out of place, but you, you fit in. You were so different that night, so much more yourself somehow, something I'd never seen, not in the whole time i'd known you. It..." She doesn't know how much to say, "Even though it was a hard night, even with all the stress."

Jack turned that bright smile and sparkling eyes to her. "Did we dance, Toshiko?" he asked, knowing they hadn't gotten to it.

"No, not really, just a brief moment before we went through the rift but..." She blushes, remembering how akward she had felt on that half turn around the empty littered floor, how she'd been more worried about her computer, and work. It all seemed so far away now. "I'm not much of a dancer anyway. There was a pilot who, but no matter."

"That's no good," he said, shaking his head softly as he reached out and took her hand. "This was a great era. I mean, sure, there was a war on...but the music and the atmosphere...the urgency. It was amazing," he said as he pulled her close.

"Jack, I wasn't joking when I said I can't at dancing." She stiffens as he pulls her close, eyes widening, trying to make herself relax, still blushing slightly. "I'm glad we were stuck there now, even briefly. It was... nice."

The Doctor had heard the music from across the way, the weather change having left the treehouse open once more. Slowly, with Atalanta at his heels, he climbed the stairs and leaned in the doorway.

He heard to footfalls, even over the music, and was watching the doorway with a wicked grin. "Hi there," he smiled. "See what I got?" he asked, nodding at the player.

"I got this," the Doctor said, gesturing towards the ball of fur and energy twining around his ankles (almost like a cat, which was weird). "This is Atalanta. Weird day, I think."

His eyes looked tired once more.

"Nice dog," he said as he sauntered over to them both. One hand dropped down for her as the other caught the Doctor by the jaw. "You look beat."

Atalanta sniffed at his hand, then sat and looked...well, cute. The Doctor ignored that and leaned against him. "Had a bit of an argument with Gwen, among other things."

House must have overslept because it was the music that woke him up. Grumbling half-heartedly (because at least it was good music), he pulled on a shirt and grabbed his cane. Then he limped barefoot up the stairs.

He hadn't been up here much since the stairs were a pain in the ass, but he recognized that the music was coming from Jack's room. He paused in the doorway. "Where'd that come from?"

"It was just here this morning," he grinned, hands pushed deep into his pockets. "I love Glenn Miller. Have you ever heard anything so sweet?" he asked as he closed his eyes, swaying to the music.

House looked behind him - made absolutely sure that no one was around - and then slipped an arm around Jack's waist and swayed with him. "Record players popping out of thin air, eh? That's promising."

He leaned back into the touch, eyes still closed. "It is. And look. I didn't just get Glenn Miller. There's more than a dozen albums," he said as he laid his hand over Greg's, pressing it into his stomach.
